Should You Block Sites Like Facebook

Let me tell you first that I generally dislike most forms of Internet filtering and censorship but sometimes it is entirely justified. I work as an IT consultant and am frequently involved in installing and configuring proxy servers which provide access to the Internet. One thing that has always surprised me is the quite blatant way that people abuse their access to the Internet at work.

You’d think that people would be discrete and cautious in their workplace but I can assure you many people happily gamble, shop or browse hard core pornography from their work desk. It’s amazing but I can assure you it happens and remember all these connections are logged and recorded to the company run IP address.

Apart from the unacceptable sites that are visited sometimes it is purely the huge amount of time that it wasted on these sites. Can you believe some people will spend 30 hours at work on social network sites, believe me it is not uncommon. So I suggest an Internet use policy which states that social sites can only be accessed in lunch hours and to be honest it’s probably better to just have facebook blocked, it might be following t he example of the Iranian government but at least people would get some work done.
