Buying A Car As Car

As a new young widow, shopping alone for the first time, I am totally shocked at the treatment I am receiving at the hands of car salespeople. Whatever happened to sexual equality?

One salesperson had the gall to ask me if I had my husband’s permission to buy a Toronto airport limo! Another salesperson cornered my 12-year-old son and asked him on the sly if I had the money to buy that particular vehicle. Many dealerships don’t even bother to approach me to ask if I would like help, and several have refused to let me drive their vehicles, giving me some pretty flaky reasons why I can’t. I have a perfect driving record, so there should be no excuse….

In increasing numbers, women have discovered that minivans and SUVs are more versatile than passenger cars and station wagons. And, having spotted a profitable trend, automakers are offering increased versatility combined with unconventional styling in so-called “crossover” vehicles. These blended cars are part sedan and part station wagon, with a touch of sport-utility added for function and fun. For example, the Chrysler Pacifica is a smaller, sporty crossover vehicle that looks like a miniature SUV. It has been a competent performer during the past few years, but sales have been slow despite sizeable rebates.
