This is clearly not sound financial thinking.
Although, the appeal of sparkling high street offers satisfy one’s short term craving for “retail therapy”, the grim reality of the true cost hits when the hidden price of high credit card interest rates (APR’s) adds up on your statement if you can’t clear the balance at the end of the month. Many naïve consumers are duped into applying for credit cards by short term interest free promotions on purchases and balance transfers, the so-called teaser rate. But they don’t consider the longer term cost of interest rates which on many cards are now running at close to 20%. Card interest rates for those with a bad credit background are now pushing 35% to 40%.
The global economic downturn has meant that many people who thought they were in secure jobs for life have suddenly found themselves on the dole queue and an increasing number of these unlucky souls quickly find they are unable to make their credit card payments on time.
These issues are even starting to affect the banks that issue the cards. Over the last 50 years, credit card loss rates tend to closely follow the national unemployment rate, but that obvious relationship has started to break down for banks and card issuers with toxic credit card portfolios. Troubled US company Washington Mutual has been told by JP Morgan that around 13% of its credit card loans are basically uncollectable, and that this figure could rise to as much as 25%.
