LAWYERS acting for troubled pop princess Britney Spears in her child custody battle have quit, saying representing her is "impossible".
Law firm Trope and Trope asked a court today to be relieved as Spears' attorneys, the Associated Press reported.
The firm cited a "breakdown" in communication with Spears that made representing her "impossible", according the filing, obtained by CelebTV.com.
A publicist for Spears' record label could not be immediately contacted.
Spears and her ex-husband Kevin Federline have been wrangling for months over custody of their sons, Sean Preston, 2, and Jayden James, 1.
Federline has temporary custody because Spears, who has limited visitation rights, has defied court orders.
They married in October 2004 and finalised their divorce in July last year.
Meanwhile, in a separate legal development, an attorney for Spears wants the Los Angeles city attorney's office to prove she is a permanent California resident and subject to state laws that require her to have a valid California driver's licence.
Spears faces up to a year of probation if convicted of driving without a valid licence, a charge to which she has pleaded not guilty.
The case stems from a videotaped fender-bender in a car park in August.
Spears' attorney Michael Flanagan requested prosecutors be required to demonstrate that the singer, who owns homes in Louisiana and Florida, intends to make Los Angeles her permanent legal home.
