ALLEGATIONS of child abuse and neglect have been raised in the bitter custody battle between pop singer Britney Spears and her ex-husband.
Child welfare investigators were looking into "multiple child abuse and neglect'' allegations, according to court documents, the Associated Press reported.
In a request to unseal parts of the case file, an attorney for the Los Angeles County Department of Children and Family Services wrote that there were concerns about the safety and welfare of Sean Preston, 2, and Jayden James, 1, if they were left in their mother's care.
The department mentioned that allegations relating to ex-husband Kevin Federline were also being investigated but the documents did not provide details.
The department requested the court not alter current custody and visitation arrangements until their investigation was finished.
Federline has temporary custody of the boys after Spears defied court orders over regular drug testing.
Spears pays Federline $US15,000 ($17,000) a month in child support.
The allegations are contained among 300 pages of documents released yesterday by Los Angeles Superior Court Commissioner Scott M. Gordon.
The documents include previous court rulings, expense reports and income statements for both parents.
Spears had asked the court to suppress details of the custody and visitation arrangements, arguing that "such information greatly increases the chances that the actions of the media could threaten the safety of the children by, for example, causing a traffic accident".
Spears is notorious for her bad driving.
She is being investigated for allegedly injuring a sheriff's deputy while leaving court in her Mercedes.
In 2006, she was photographed driving with her son on her lap, and in October she pleaded not guilty to driving without a driver's licence.
A hit-and-run charge from an August car park crash was dismissed after she paid the car's owner.
