HOLLYWOOD comic Molly Shannon will star in the American version of Kath & Kim.

The Saturday Night Live alumni was confirmed late yesterday as being one of the two leads in the soon-to-be filmed US adaptation of the Australian hit comedy series, to be produced by US network NBC.

"I can confirm that Molly Shannon has been cast in Kath & Kim," an NBC spokesman told The Daily Telegraph.

Shannon, 43, will take on the role of suburban mother Kath, played on the local series by Jane Turner.

The Ohio native sprang to fame in US comedy institution Saturday Night Live, in which she starred between 1995 to 2001.

On the show she played various characters, including her iconic awkward schoolgirl role Mary Katharine Gallagher, who she later portrayed on the big screen in 1999 movie Superstar.

The mother-of-two was the lead in critically acclaimed independent film Year of the Dog.

Fellow film veteran Joan Cusack, 44, was also in contention for the US version of the series but is said to no longer be attached to the project.

Too much Aussie humor that Americans wouldn't understand. The different slang, too, nobody would understand it.

Oh yeah, it would be completely re-scripted.

That being said, I'd never watch it. I can't stand 99% of the shit they air on the TV these days.

Ya, I have a pretty short attention span when it comes to tv. I hated all the usual shows growing up. I'm weird like that.

Whar was that an adaptation from?

One of the very few that seems to have worked. But it's still not screamingly popular.

yeah, im pretty sure it was...or maybe it was the UK...

it's like 'who's line is it anyway' which is very very funny!

"Thank God You're Here!" its' pretty good, expecially when they have good comedians on the show..
