NEW YORK (AP) -- Dan Rather filed a $70 million lawsuit Wednesday against CBS, alleging that the network made him a "scapegoat" for a discredited story about President Bush's National Guard service.

The 75-year-old Rather, whose final months were clouded by controversy over the report, says the complaint stems from "CBS' intentional mishandling" of the aftermath of the story.

The lawsuit, filed in State Supreme Court in Manhattan, also names CBS President and CEO Leslie Moonves, Viacom Inc. Chairman Sumner Redstone, and former CBS News President Andrew Heyward.

Rather is seeking $20 million in compensatory damages and $50 million in punitive damages.

CBS spokesman Dana McClintock said: "These complaints are old news, and this lawsuit is without merit."

yeah, cos its not really his fault, he has ppl who write the news cast for him, he just reads ot off a paper or a teleprompter. CBS just wanted a way to get rid of him so they didnt have to pay for his retirement. sadly , its a common pratice amoung big companies. thats why i dont want to work for one and want to go off on my own.

yeah, most companies today wont let you get that far, they will can you BEFORE you can hit your pension. thats why they got rid of Dan rather, because they didnt want to pay him his belowted pension., which was 5 plus million a year. thats alot of money for doing nothing.

I have seen companies do that before, most recent , that evil empire thats ran by a mouse did that.
