STUDENTS at a West Australian college were joking when they took small bags of sugar to school and told classmates it was the synthetic drug methylamphetamine, or ice.
But for Bunbury Catholic College principal Mandy Connor and the local police it was no laughing matter.
And the Year Nine students at the school in WA's southwest have been disciplined.
"There was an issue at the college last week where some year nine students played a joke on other students by bringing small bags of sugar to school and pretending it was the drug ice," Ms Connor said today.
"The students have been sanctioned in accordance with college policy in recognition of the fact that pretending to have drugs at school is a serious issue.
"It is a serious issue for students to deliberately pretend that they have drugs on the campus.
"I am sure the students will learn from making a poor choice in relation to a serious matter and they now need to be able to move on from that."
Ms Connor said she had liaised with local police.
Bunbury police said they were aware of the situation but were not involved because no offence had been committed.
