A Melbourne woman who developed melanoma after using solariums has lost her battle with cancer.

Twenty-six-year-old Clare Oliver had been campaigning to raise the awareness of the dangers of tanning after being diagnosed four years ago.

She died in hospital this morning.

Last month Ms Oliver appeared on ABC TV's 7.30 Report to speak publicly for the first time from her hospital bed in a bid to stop others from suffering her fate.

An otherwise healthy-looking young woman, Ms Oliver spoke about how her biggest goal in life was to make it to her 26th birthday.

"Here I am, 25, and I've been told that I've got only a few weeks to live, and I don't think anything - solariums, looking good, having a golden tan - is worth that," she said.

She was diagnosed with melanoma last year after taking advantage of a package offer at a solarium to work up a golden tan that she thought looked healthy.

Doctors have been campaigning the dangers of solariums for years, but Ms Oliver's message seems to have reached those in higher power.

In August Federal Health Minister Tony Abbott was looking toward imposing tougher regulations on the tanning industry.

"There is no consistent national regulation of solariums," he said.

"In fact, in most states there is really no regulation at all - and so I have today written to my state and territory colleagues suggesting that it is important that we have nationally consistent regulation in this area."

The solarium industry is currently governed by a voluntary code.

The Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre has paid tribute Ms Oliver with oncologist Grant McArthur saying her campaigning will save other lives.

"We've had really an unprecedented and prompt response from our Government, she's touched the hearts of many people and is changing the behaviour of many Australians who are at risk of dying from melanoma skin cancer," he said

she did have very very white skin...

the people at the Solarium should have advised her against have sunbed and maybe a spray tan instead...

she also should have known better...

Actually, I have a pretty nice tan, especially after being outside all day Sunday.

I let it happen NATURALLY though, I don't go into a booth LOOKING to kill my skin.

DJDarknez
09-25-2007, 09:04 PM
A more even tan? WTF? Fucking people. She got an even tan alright, especially if she's going to be cremated.

It's called rolling over on a blanket. And I'm sure there is somewhere secluded to take care of the no tan lines thing.

Why is it so important? Idiots.

Sgdalero

tan= healthy, healthy = more attrative , more attrative= more sex with others.
