what is the price?

DJDarknez
07-27-2004, 02:23 PM
No idea. I'm sure they won't come out with a price until they're about ready to release it. I would epect it to be slightly more than XP, whatever that costs.

But keep in mind, Longhorn is designed for a 64-bit processor. It's not going to do you any good on your current computer.

Ok so I am the only legal person running it through msdn partnership, lol. What do you guys think about it? I think it is ok but it seems like the os itself has alot of resource issues already granted still in alpha release but the cpu time was off the charts and system resources were getting killed with nothing running. I think once they finalize it it should look good but now i am a little skeptical. THe interface is horrible in my opinion but then again all ms os interfaces are bad. Give me a gnome interface :D

lol @ fishy

No surprise that it'll peak your system resources (unless your already running a 64-bit). It is, after all, an O/S meant for the eventually to-be-realeased 64 bit processors.

I haven't run it myself yet. I have alpha version....um....2940...3250....xxxx....whatever it was. I e-mailed a guy about it, and he says it's buggy as hell, not to bother with it quite yet.

I own a Dual 2.0GHz G5 tower with an nVidia Ultra 6800 DDR2 running Panther. At work I use a Toshiba Satellite 3.47GHz P4HT with a suhweet 17" widescreen display. I manage 18 Windows servers (11 win2k and 7 win2k3) as well as about 2 dozen PCs running anything from Win95 to XP Pro and a few thousand Macs ranging from the 575 (yep, they still work and are useful) to the latest eMacs and Aluminum Powerbooks. I had a Red Hat box until they disco'd free support.

When it comes to judging a platform, you can listen to a bigot that has only worked on one platform, or you can listen to someone who has run the big 3 (Win, Mac, *nix). I am the latter. My Red Hat machine was the ONLY one that NEVER EVER - not in 6 years - crashed. My Macs crash occasionally, but the hardware works forever (see above with the 575s from 1994). The only thing nice about the Windows machines are that they are dirt cheap and easy to upgrade, and there is always a piece of software to do what you want to do - usually it's free. With Mac OS 9 that was rare, with OS X, it's starting to be a non-issue. Windows software crashes more than my alcoholic best friend.

The same can be said about Windows XP. LOL!!! :D
